"As an adult learner and as a teacher myself, I cannot say enough in praise of Beth’s gift for imparting not only sound technical foundations but also the joy of musicianship, of making the oboe sound beautiful, even in the very first lessons." - Sylvia Brown
Students excel when the work they do is balanced between music they enjoy and exercises to improve their technique. Students are offered opportunities for performance, participation in music festivals, and scholarship competitions. Advanced students may be encouraged to audition for elite ensembles and/or prepare a solo recital. Lessons focus on good posture, hand position, control of the breath and the anatomy of respiration, sound and technique. Students can expect to purchase a method book and selected pieces as needed. Reeds must be purchased from a music store for the first year or two of play, but hand made reeds will become available as a student progresses. Advanced students will be encouraged to learn to make their own reeds. Remote access lessons are available through Zoom.
2020-2021 lesson rate is $175/month. Typically this will include 4 or 5 60-minute lessons as well as additional content as it becomes available. Additional content may include masterclasses with guest oboists; reed making sessions, and admission to concerts. Lessons take place at Beth's home in central Edmonton.
COVID-19 precautions include disinfecting all surfaces before each lesson; students sit or stands 7 feet away from instructor, a 5'x3' plexiglass shield sits between student and instructor, items passed between student and teacher are put on a disinfected shelf and picked up by instructor with gloved hands. Reeds will be adjusted with disinfected tools while Beth is masked and gloved. An air purifier that uses HEPA filter and UV cycles the air in the lesson room 2x per hour.
A limited number of entry-level oboes are available to rent for $20/month for beginner students enrolled in weekly lessons.
